Coyam is the icon wine of Emiliana, the largest organic winery in the world, and the wine stood out in this international competition judged by Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers. The wines tasted were an international selection and in all price ranges. The only condition for entry to the competition was that the grapes or wine were certified as organic or biodynamic, according to Master of Wine Patrick Schmitt, editor in chief of \u201cThe Drinks Business\u201d.<\/p>\n
Three specific characteristics of Coyam 2017 impressed the judges: \u201cFirstly, it is biodynamic, secondly, relative to the rest, it\u2019s not actually that pricy \u2013 costing around \u00a320 \u2013 and thirdly, it\u2019s not dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maipo Valley\u201d.<\/p>\n
Winemaker Noelia Orts highlights that this prize is an extraordinary recognition. \u201cThis is truly a great achievement, with an extremely discerning British publication, tasting blind, selecting Coyam among their top 10. I\u2019m so proud as this shows that the work we\u2019ve been doing with Coyam, from the vineyard to the cellar, has produced great results\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n
In the tasting note, the judges were impressed with the fruit expression in the blend. \u201cCoyam is a ripe, intense red with plenty of vanilla and toast from oak barriques, and some firm tannins too, along with a touch of alcohol warmth, all of which one would expect from a top-end Chilean wine, but what I like about this flagship biodynamic Emiliana expression is the fruit. Not only is it pristine, and ripe, but varied, with sweet cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry, a touch of blackberry jam, but also some bright red berries too\u201d.<\/p>\n
