Environmentally Friendly Packaging

In accordance with Emiliana’s philosophy of producing high quality wines with environmentally friendly and socially responsible methods, we have set the goal of making all the materials used in wine packaging to be as sustainable as possible.

Examples of materials used in our products:

1. Bottles

As part of our sustainability plan, we are using glass containers that are 14% lighter and therefore generate less pollution (CO2 emissions) in their production as well as in product shipping.

2. Corks

At Emiliana we use different types of natural corks that have added value, since the material used in their production comes from sustainably managed FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests.

FSC-certified products guarantee consumers that they can contribute to the preservation of forests and promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.

Our cork supplier in Portugal was one of the first producers to obtain this certification, and its Chilean branch will be certified in early 2010, which will complete the certification chain in order to provide our customers with an environmentally responsible product.

3. Screw Caps and Wine Capsules

Some of our products are sealed with screw caps made of 100% aluminum, which are recyclable indefinitely with no loss during the smelting process.

The aluminum recycling process is very well organized in developed countries and therefore many of our primary European customers have replaced corks with screw caps for their recyclability.

We are therefore now in the process of analyzing the use of aluminum capsules to contribute to recycling and avoid using tin, complex, and PVC capsules.

4. Packaging Material

Our 100% recycled, 100% recyclable solid cardboard cases and partitions are made from pre- and post-consumption recycled fibers processed in plants that are especially equipped to classify, clean, and prepare the fibers for use by the manufacturer.

5. Wooden Cases

For our icon wine Gê, we use wooden boxes or special cases made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified oak or pine. This certification guarantees consumers that they are contributing to the preservation of forests and promoting environmentally appropriate, socially responsible, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.

6. Label Papers

We have used many different types of paper for our labels (textured, smooth, cotton, etc.), but today we are focusing on their origin and manufacture as a means of providing the packaging with added value.

We are currently in a transition phase and seeking out papers that are at least partially recycled, certified for proper forest management, and that have other important characteristics such as being chlorine free.

We also try to minimize the use of foils (a thin layer used to give shine and highlight the labels) due to its metal content.
