Santiago, January 2012. Viña Emiliana is not only one of the largest organic and biodynamic wineries in Chile and the world; it is also the first to certify all of the wines it produces and to receive two different international fair-trade certifications. The most recent is Fairtrade FLO, which endorses the high standard of Emiliana’s social, economic, and environmental performance.

This certification assures consumers of fair trade products that their purchase contributes to fair economic and social development, especially to the development of social, training, infrastructure, and environmental projects, among others.

Fair trade is part of a commercial network that seeks to achieve greater equity in international trade based on dialogue, transparency, and respect. Through its credible certification system, FLO-CERT contributes to the social and economic development of both growers and workers.

The Fairtrade FLO certification obtained by Viña Emiliana complements the Fair for Life – Social & Fairtrade certification that the winery was granted by the Swiss-based Institute for Marketecology (IMO) in early 2011, which guarantees that human rights are respected during all stages of production and that workers enjoy decent and fair working conditions.

Emiliana is the only Chilean winery to have obtained these two major certifications, which affirm the company’s strong commitment to its workers. It is also worth noting that the winery has implemented several CSR Programs, including one to promote microenterprises among its workers, who are now producers of bio-intensive organic vegetables, natural honey, organic and biodynamic olive oil, eggs and chickens, and alpaca and sheep wool, among other products. This program has enabled Emiliana workers to supplement their income and provide for their own families as well.

About Viña Emiliana
Viñedos Emiliana emerged in 1998 as the only project in Chile to incorporate organic and biodynamic agriculture. The company has 997 hectares planted in the Casablanca, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, and Bío Bío valleys, all of which are free of pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers. Of that total, 922 hectares are certified organic, and 583 of those are also biodynamic.

All of Emiliana’s vineyards are organic and/or biodynamic-certified by IMO (Switzerland) and Demeter (Germany). Emiliana was the first Chilean winery to receive ISO 14001 certification for environmental management, and its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy has been certified by IMO FOR LIFE. Most recently, the company has obtained carbon neutral certification for its main vineyard, Los Robles, in the Colchagua Valley.

In 2011 Emiliana sold 340,000 cases of premium organic wine, positioning the company as one of the largest organic wineries on the planet, with products that are currently sold in more than 50 countries.

The Emiliana family of wines includes its Gê and Coyam lines of biodynamic wines, its Signos de Orígen, Novas and Adobe organic lines, and its integrally managed line, Emiliana Reserve.

In a ceremony attended by the major authorities of Chile’s V Region, ProChile recognized the efforts of a number of associations, companies, and professionals for outstanding work in promoting the country’s exports.

In this context ProChile recognized Emiliana for having incorporated sustainability into its productive processes and its relationship with its workers and community, efforts backed by certifications from Fair For Life (IMO, Fair Trade), Carbon Neutral (TUV SUD), and Social Responsibility (IMO).

ProChile emphasized that “Emiliana is a company that develops its strategy for promoting exports with quality, responsibility, and seriousness, which undoubtedly helps make its work easier.”

Jose Guilisasti, Emiliana’s General Manager, received the award. The award was presented on June 10 during the plenary session of ProChile’s Valparaíso business meeting.
