Viñedos Emiliana is Chile’s Top-Ranked for Climate Change Preparedness

Viñedos Emiliana is Chile’s Top-Ranked for Climate Change Preparedness

•	Viñedos Emiliana obtained one of the highest rankings in a study conducted by Fundación Chile and Capital magazine, making it Chile’s leading winery for its biodynamic and organic vineyard management.

•	Emiliana’s certifications in social responsibility, sustainable initiatives, and Carbon Neutral status are further testaments to Emiliana’s efforts toward sustainability and its commitment to the environment over the past 12 years.

•	This new acknowledgement reaffirms the winery’s first place ranking in 2009, awarded by England’s most prestigious trade magazine, The Drinks Business, which ranked the Chilean winery as the most sustainable in the country.

August 2010. Recognizing the importance of initiatives for sustainability and reaffirming the need for instruments for measuring carbon footprints, on Friday, July 30th the Fundación Chile and Capital magazine presented the first national ranking of Chilean companies that are best prepared for climate change.

Viñedos Emiliana obtained one of the top rankings—6th place—and was the only winery in the top 10. Classified as one of Chile’s most important biodynamic and organic wineries, over the years Emiliana has made an ongoing commitment to its team, the environment, and the community, that has converted in organic, biodynamic vineyards certified by IMO (Switzerland) and Demeter (Germany).

Emiliana was also the first Chilean winery to receive the ISO 14001 certification for environmental management as well as having Corporate Social Responsibility policies in place that are certified by IMO for Life (Switzerland). Most recently, the company’s main vineyard, Los Robles in the Colchagua Valley, was certified Carbon Neutral by the German certifying agency TÜV, which will allow the vineyard to further reduce its carbon emissions.

The study conducted by Fundación Chile and Capital analyzed more than 100 companies to determine whether they were “proactive in environmental matters, with a clear understanding of the possible commercial implications [of climate change] in terms of both threats and opportunities.”

The test measured six central aspects, most related to climate change management, such as corporate policies, the company itself and its suppliers, communication, and the actions taken with respect to climate change. It also measured companies’ vulnerability to climate change with respect to their markets, their competitors, and regulation.

For Emiliana, sustainability has been the way to best guarantee quality and ensure our long-term success as a business. Caring for the environment and respecting our workers and the larger community, while being economically viable have been the central pillars of the company’s plan of action. For this same reason, the winery’s sustainable, organic, and biodynamic growing methods have enabled Emiliana to achieve more balanced, healthy, and productive vineyards, which translates into better grapes and therefore better quality wines.

Also noteworthy are Emilana’s “green” practices,” such as the use of solar panels, biomass, biofuels, the 3R program for solid waste (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), our LIW program for managing effluent, and the use of more environmentally friendly packaging.

From this perspective, therefore, this latest honor firmly establishes Viñedos Emiliana as Chile’s most sustainable winery. Its high quality wines and outstanding commitment and actions in favor of the environment, its employees, and the community at large have made this winery the leader among companies preparing to face the challenge of climate change.

In its 2010 evaluation, Wine Access, one of Canada’s most influential trade magazines, rated the 2007 Coyam at 93 points.

In its 2010 evaluation, Wine Access, one of Canada’s most influential trade magazines, rated the 2007 Coyam at 93 points.

Jun 3 2009 With important wine industry specialists evaluating the finest wines in the world, Canadian magazine Wine Access placed Viñedo Emiliana and its biodynamic wine Coyam 2007 among the finest in its special on “Winning Wines of Chile.”

The same magazine ranked our 2006 Coyam at 91 points last year. Since its first vintage in 2001, this wine has received important accolades that command respect from important wine critics and leading the way for the development of more excellent organic and biodynamic wines of the highest quality.

The 2007 Coyam is Chile’s second wine to be certified biodynamic and shows Emiliana’s evolution as it produces this wine under the highest standards of quality, which coincide with the ongoing search for excellence.

The name of this red blend, Coyam, comes from the native Mapudungun language and means Chilean oak. This tree is indigenous to southern Chile and grows abundantly on the hills that ring Emiliana’s Los Robles estate in the Colchagua Valley, where Coyam is grown and vinified.

The magazine’s tasting notes describe the 2007 Coyam as the best vintage to date, and “replete with blackberries, savoury red fruits, floral mineral aspects and a dusting of toffee, chocolate and coffee. The palate is rich and smooth. its dark fruit flavours preview a glossy, slippery texture that slides down the throat effortlessly.” Author Anthony Gismondi goes on to say that “this is quintessential biodynamic fruit, alive with flavours.”

This latest recognition joins the long list of awards earned by Emiliana products, and which have helped position Emiliana as the most important organic and biodynamic winery, not only in Chile, but in the world.
In the recently concluded 17th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Emiliana received Gold Medals for Coyam 2007, Winemaker’s Selection Chardonnay Marsanne Viognier 2008, Winemaker’s Selection Syrah Mourvedre 2006, and Winemaker’s Selection Syrah 2007.

In the 27th International Wine Challenge-2010, which draws attention to the world’s finest wines, Emiliana received a gold medal for its biodynamic wine Gê 2005.

In the 27th International Wine Challenge-2010, which draws attention to the world’s finest wines, Emiliana received a gold medal for its biodynamic wine Gê 2005.

May 2010. Important figures from the international wine industry were in attendance at the 27th edition of the International Wine Challenge in London when Emiliana received a Gold Medal for the 2005 vintage of Gê, Latin America’s first certified biodynamic wine.

More than 45 wine-producing countries participated, and a total of 4,026 medals were awarded: 326 golds, 1,445 silvers, and 2,255 bronze. Another 3,301 wines were commended.

Emiliana’s Gê stood out for its plum-red color, pleasing volume, balanced palate, and its elegant, well-rounded tannins that blend perfectly for a long, intense finish. Made with 30% Syrah, 30% Carmenere, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Merlot, the nose exudes aromas of ripe black fruits, cassis, berries, and forest fruits that blend delicately with the oak, which lends light mineral, toffee, and chocolate notes.

“Just being biodynamic makes Gê different. And keeping a distance from the typical industry standardization of common wines, we return a bit to the archaeology of the varieties and the countryside, and this is definitely expressed in the wine,” explains Álvaro Espinoza, Emiliana’s consulting winemaker.

This is the most recent of a long list of the awards and acknowledgments for Emiliana products that have helped position the winery as the most important organic and biodynamic winery in the world. Other recent awards include the excellent results earned in the 17th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2010 in which Emiliana won Gold Medals for its Coyam 2007, Novas Winemaker’s Selection Chardonnay Viognier Marsanne 2008, Novas Winemaker’s Selection Syrah Mourvedre 2006, and Novas Winemaker’s Selection Syrah 2007.
