Nicolás Joly in Chile

Invited by El Mundo del Vino, Viñedos Emiliana, Viña Lapostolle, and Viña Matetic, the world leader of biodynamics, Nicolás Joly, comes to our country to conduct an exclusive seminar: “Biodynamism: back to the origin”. Under the context of sustainability, the French specialist will conduct the first seminar on biodynamism® in the country and will visit the three host vineyards that practice this type of agriculture.

Nicolás Joly, leader of biodynamics in France and the world, arrives to our country to conduct the first national seminar on biodynamics: “Biodynamism: back to the origin”. This science, based on the anthroposophist theory of the Austro-Hungarian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), proposes that man’s intervention must not alter the natural ecological equilibrium of the agricultural field, but worry about preserving the existing balance without depending from external factors. This science intends to safeguard the vitality and balance of the earth by means of natural methods generated in the vineyards, through the interrelation among the mineral, vegetal, and animal kingdoms, which man must safeguard and respect.

This process means that the field must be understood as a living and self-sufficient organism, formed by all the animals and plants that live on it. It considers and understands every vineyard as a closed unit, complex in itself, where it is essential to motivate, develop and protect its flora and fauna biodiversity.

At the same time, this agricultural practice proposes to organize the pruning, sowing and harvest, and other agricultural tasks in accordance to a “Biodynamic Calendar”, which shows the influence stages of the sun and the moon’s energy on the plants during the year.

Joly’s arrival, produced by planetavino.com, is confirmed for Monday, April 19th, to then, on Tuesday 20th, conduct this important seminar in Grand Hyatt Santiago hotel. In the evening, Joly will conduct a discussion round table with Chilean biodynamic producers, to finish the day with a great tasting of biodynamic wines from Chile and the world.

The next day, Joly will travel to Colchagua valley, where he will visit the vineyards from Viña Lapostolle during the morning, and in the evening he will be received in Viñedos Emiliana. Next day, he will visit Viña Matetic, located in San Antonio valley.

His visit in Chile will take place until Thursday, April 22nd, with a lunch with all the hosts of the event, to then continue his trip to Canada. Joly’s legacy will remain in Chile through his book “The wine from the sky to the soil” and his wines Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, which will be sold in the stores of El Mundo del Vino.

Joly is internationally well-known for being the spokesperson of Biodynamism applied to the vineyard, understanding the field as a whole connected to nature and cosmos, which produces healthier ecosystems and wines closer to their origin. To many, not using chemicals is favourable since it more faithfully reflects the origin, the terroir of each wine. That is why, for Joly, biodynamics is the way to find and express the true spirit of the grape and its soil.

This philosophy, applied in its totality by Joly in his biodynamic vineyards of Clos de la Coulée de Serrant in La Loire, has taken him to visit the world with the group that disseminates these wines, called “La Renaissance des Appellations”.

For the winemakers who apply biodynamics, what Joly calls the “four levels of the matter” (heat, light, water, and minerals) have a fundamental influence in the growth cycle of plants. To dominate and direct these forces, following the anthroposophist principles of Steiner, different natural elements are used in the vineyards, such as quartz, chamomile, milfoil, and valerian, among others, which are mixed with water and are “dynamized” to help each vineyard to obtain more strength and quality in their lands.

According to The New York Times, winemakers from all Europe “bow” to Joly. “To get to know Chenin Blanc variety starting with Joly’s wine is like knowing music starting with a Beethoven’s quartet”, says Frank Prial, journalist specialized in wines.

The sale of tickets for the seminar will start from the month of April in stores of El Mundo del Vino. The price is $35.000 CLP per person, which includes lunch at the Grand Hyatt Santiago hotel and wine tasting at the end of the seminar.
