Chile’s Second Biodynamic Wine: Coyam 2007

October 2009.
Coyam, one of the icon wines of Emiliana Vineyards, recognized worldwide for its quality and uniqueness, was released in a 2007 harvest, as the second certified biodynamic wine of Chile. The first Chilean wine being certified as an biodynamic wine was Gê, also from Emiliana.

This is an important step towards consolidating the winery’s business model, which aims at becoming leaders in the category of sustainably produced, organic and biodynamic wines.

Obtaining biodynamic certification arises from the need to continue creating maximum-quality wines that represent the process of nature; its cycles, rhythm and balance. Coyam’s unique character and personality is accentuated in this 2007 harvest. The care and respect for the soil, together with synchronizing with cosmic cycles, seek to renew the earth in order to produce healthier foods which are replete with energy and vitality.
From a warm Mediterranean climate, Coyam 2007 faithfully portrays its terroir: the Los Robles farm. Aged for 13 months, its intense red-violet color expresses a harmony between ripe black fruits, berries, cassis and fruits of the forest, delicately blending with wood, and including soft notes of minerals, toffee and chocolate.

“Harvesting each of the varieties at its ideal point of ripeness allows for a very pleasant softness in the tannins, as well as good acidity indexes. This translated to the almost non-existent correction of the wines that compose it, which allowed Coyam’s defined character to be obtained. A wine of ripe fruit, a good body, volume and a rich balance, with a great potential for aging”, explained enologist Alvaro Espinoza.

Certified by Demeter International (Germany), this wine is a blend of 38% Syrah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Carménère, 17 % Merlot, 2 % Petit Verdot and 1 % Mourvedre.

For José Guiliasti, Emiliana’s Agricultural Manager, this product launch demonstrates that the idea of constructing a sustainable project, under organic and biodynamic production processes, has been a vision which represents leadership in the wine-making world. The high quality of its wines is reflected by important national and international recognition, attesting to the results obtained with its products throughout the world.

Consolidation of Emiliana Vineyards

Coyam 2007 faithfully represents the consolidation and evolution shown by Emiliana Vineyards over the last ten years. A leader in organic and biodynamic agriculture in Chile, Emiliana currently has 1,200 hectares of organic and biodynamic vineyards, where flowers, native vegetation, animals and a great degree of biodiversity can all be observed.

Recently, at the Wine Tasting Round Table held by CAV (Wine Lover’s Club), Coyam 2007 received 92 points, standing out from other mixed reds. Recommended for storage, this wine was described as having a pleasant balance between volume and equilibrium in the mouth, excellent body, round and gentle tannins, and a long finish, showing its character and personality.
